Gum Diseases
Gingivitis
Bleeding gums can be a sign of swollen and inflamed gums known as Gingivitis which is caused by bacterial plaque forming on the surface of teeth. If left untreated, gingivitis can cause bad breath, acute infections or can progress into a more serious condition known as periodontitis or periodontal disease (gum disease). If you have red, swollen gums that bleed easily (but are not normally painful), you should see one of our dentists who may also refer you to our Dental Hygienist for treatment. Together, they will diagnose your condition and formulate a treatment plan accordingly, as well as providing advice on maintaining an oral health regime to suit your condition. Gingivitis can be prevented or reversed by having regular hygiene appointments, supported with efficient teeth cleaning routines at home.
Periodontitis
Periodontal disease or Gum disease is a serious bacterial infection of the gums which destroys the attachment fibres and supporting bone that hold your teeth firmly in place and in turn causes loose or loss of teeth. There is also evidence to indicate periodontal disease can increase the risk of heart attack or stroke, as well as other serious health problems.
Periodontitis, a common condition which affects many adults, usually develops painlessly and is mainly caused by poor oral hygiene, although it is easily avoidable by improving your oral hygiene regime (brushing at least twice a day), daily interdental cleaning, attending regular dental check-ups and professional cleaning as advised.
At Belmont Dental Care, our hygienist Racheal is highly trained in the prevention and treatment of gum conditions such as gingivitis or periodontitis. Rachael will carry out a thorough assessment, discuss your treatment requirements and explain a home plan regarding your oral health routine.
